So what has STAINES got?  Not a lot?

Well you are probably wrong...

Did you know that in Staines we have:

·  Six orchestras (I kid you not)?
·  Two world-class choirs (and several other superb choirs)?
·  A musical theatre group?
·  A Cool and Baaad nite-club life?
·  At least 3 theatres just a hop and a skip away?
·  Arthouse cinemas a heartbeat down the road?
·  A famous artwalk around our own town?
·  At least two award-winning brass bands?
·  The world’s biggest rock band (well they think so anyway)?
·  Two racetrack venues almost on your doorstep?

Not to mention boat trips, cycle rides, lake-side walks, tow-path strolls, moorland meanders, long long pub crawls and London just a short train journey....

About Ad Pontes...

STAINES was originally known as AD PONTES in year 14AD.  Ad Pontes (Latin for
at the Bridge) was of strategic importance as it was located at the only crossing point of the River Thames upstream from London on the road to Silchester.  The bridge was probably made of stone so the word ‘Stones’ may come have been corrupted, over time, into the name Staines.  There is also some suggestion that the prehistoric site of the “Nine Stones” was located nearby (some say near Hythe by the M25) and the Saxon for “stones” is “Stanes”.

The Staines Arts and Lifestyle Magazine is called AD PONTES to commemorate this very early start and our motto is Ad Pontes Prospicimus ~ “At the Bridges We Look Forward”.
