Windsor Arts Centre: Box Office: 01753 859336
Director: Kenneth Brannagh
127 mins. (screened with an intermission)
Based on the infamous light-hearted William Shakespearian pastoral
comedy c.1599
Synopsis
Rosalind, the daughter of Duke Senior, is raised at the court of Duke
Frederick - younger brother to Duke Senior, and then took over his
dukedom - with her cousin Celia (daughter to Duke Frederick). She falls
in love with a young man named Orlando, but before she can even think
twice about it, she is banished by Duke Frederick, who threatens death
if she comes near the court again.

Bryce Dallas Howard (spooky films like ‘The
Village’ and ‘Lady in the Water’ and
daughter of Ron Howard), tony-award winning Kevin Kline and
‘Doctor Octopus’ Alfred Molina star in director
Kenneth Branagh’s new adaptation of William
Shakespeare’s comedy, As You Like It, making its debut this
autumn at Windsor Arts centre.
Branagh employs a star-studded cast that also features Brian Blessed as
Duke Frederick/Duke Senior, Romola Garai as Celia, Adrian Lester as
Oliver, Janet McTeer as Audrey and David Oyelowo as Orlando. Also
included in the cast are Richard Briers as Old Adam, Jimmy Yuill as
Corin, Alex Wyndham as Silvius and Jade Jefferies as Phoebe.
Traditionally, The play is set in a duchy in France (possibly
Ardennes), but most of the action takes place in a mystical location
called the ‘Forest of Arden’, thought to be based
upon ‘Arden’ in Warwickshire near
Shakespeare’s home. The word
originally derived from the British Celtic word ardu, meaning
“high land”. Branagh relocates the movie version to
japan to concentrate on the mysterious and exotic landscapes.
The elaborate gender reversals in the story can present difficulties
for actors and actresses but tend to give the story a very contemporary
feel. In Shakespeare’s day, all parts would be played by a
male actor. So the male actor (in those days)
would have to play the part of a girl -Rosalind - but disguise herself
as a boy!
HBO presents the film in association with BBC Films and A Shakespeare
Film Company Production. “As You Like It,” adapted
for the screen and directed by Kenneth Branagh, features a design team
of Tim Harvey (production) and Susannah Buxton (costumes) Jenny
Shircore (makeup and hair). The film also features music composed by
Patrick Doyle who has worked on many projects for
Branagh and also on scores for many films including Harry Potter and
the Goblet of Fire and Gosford Park.
“All the world’s a stage And all the men and women
merely players”

Synopsis
TV and stage icon Felicity Kendal stars as ‘celebrity
mother’ Florence Lancaster. Amidst the glittering decadence
of fashionable London society in the late 1920’s, The Vortex
centres on the tempestuous relationship between Florence and her
hedonistic son Nicky.
Written by Noel Coward in 1923 and opened on his twenty-fifth birthday
at Hampstead, The Vortex was critically well-received at the time but
probably makes more sense to us now as we become surrounded by
hedonists and philanderers. The main character, Florence, is very
recognisable to 21st century audiences. A shallow idle-rich
‘celeb’ with hardly any sense, no ethical codes and
almost no perceptible skills or talents- she seems to exist only to
pursue fame, money and gratuitous sexual congress. If Coward had
written The Vortex now, the central character would be Hello magazine
front-page material.
Felicity Kendal is universally loved for her many television comedy
drama credits from The Good Life to Rosemary and Thyme. She returns to
Windsor following her huge sell-out success here and in the West End in
Noel Coward’s Fallen Angels.
Sir Peter Hall - (watch this space at AdPontes-Staines.com about his
latest project as director of The Rose Theatre at Kingston
upon Thames)- directs a star cast.
