Chekhov at 'The Rose' Kingston

The New Rose Theatre Kingston

After many years of anticipation, the Rose of Kingston theatre will give its first public performance in the newly completed venue on January 16th 2008. Thanks to the support of the Royal Borough of Kingston, Kingston University, Friends of the Rose, the local community and a number of trusts and foundations, Kingston will have its theatre in the New Year.

The Rose will open with one of the word's great classics Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov. Sir Peter Hall will direct this production by English Touring Theatre, which will embark on a nationwide tour after opening at the Rose of Kingston. Sir Peter Hall has led the vision for the Rose for the past 5 years and directed As You Like It in the shell of the theatre, prior to its completion.

The inaugural season at the Rose will also include Visiting Mr. Green, a play by Jeff Baron, with Warren Mitchell; the musical Blonde Bombshells of 1943; George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl presented by Birmingham Stage Company; Northern Broadsides with a production of Romeo and Juliet; and National Youth Music Theatre and Kingston University's production of The Ragged Child.

In addition to these productions, there will be a number of one night events including Sweet William with Michael Pennington; a monthly show from the Comedy Store, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, An Audience with Rabbi Lionel Blue, and other music and comedy acts.

The opening season at the Rose of Kingston will enable the theatre company to explore how the theatre space works and will encourage a wide range of audiences into the new venue. Fundraising for the theatre will continue throughout this exploratory season in order to realise the vision for a repertory ensemble company from September 2008.

Full details of the season will be available at the beginning of November, when the theatre will launch the programme and booking will open for the first season at the Rose. Friends of the Rose will benefit from priority booking tickets from Monday 5th November. Public booking for the season will open on Monday 12th November 2007.

Kingston Theatre Trust is a Registered Charity No. 1000182

Chains at The Orange Tree- Richmond

Chains at Orange Tree, Richmond

by Elizabeth Baker

Wednesday 14 November -
Saturday 15 December 2007

In the new sprawling suburbs of pre-First World War London thousands of young men commute six days a week to their clerking lives with no hope of respite until retirement arrives, while their wives struggle to make ends meet. But consternation is caused when one of them announces that he is to emigrate to Australia to find a new life. Will Charlie now leave Lydia and his job, will Maggie go ahead and marry Mr Foster, should Percy commit himself to Sybil? Just what
are the chains that bind us to our country, to our families, to our homes and to our work? And how strong are the chains of security when freedom seems to beckon?

Elizabeth Baker’s 1909 play captures a world of lower middle class life with all its hopes and fears that is seldom reflected in the theatre of the time. A rare Orange Tree discovery.

Originally performed in 1910

Panic cell at The Iguana- Egham 26 Nov

The band Panic Cells' recent debut live performances are anything to go by, the band have a healthy future to look forward to. Aside from the responsive audiences frantically thrashing like mad, and the bands' ability to thrive on such energy, the new material presented to the masses was embraced like old favourite classics
