Laleham is a village in the borough of Spelthorne, in the county of Surrey in South East England and is close to the River Thames and to Staines town centre. It has a wildlife park called Laleham Park by the River Thames and a famous camping site. Penton Hook Lock is nearby and the historic town of Chertsey is across the river on the other side of Chertsey Bridge.

The word Laleham probably comes from ‘lael’ meaning twig and ‘ham’ meaning water meadow or village. Laleham appears on the Middlesex Domesday Map within the Domesday Book of 1086 as Leleham. It was held partly by Fécamp Abbey from the Count of Mortain and partly by Estrild, the nun. Its domesday assets were: 10 hides. It had 6½ ploughs, meadow for 5 ploughs, cattle pasture. It rendered £5.[2] The foundations of the parish church of All Saints date back to the 12th century.[3] Records show that in the 13th century the monks of Westminster Abbey had their ‘Grange’ and watermill on the banks of the Thames very close to the site of Laleham Abbey.

It was in 1970 that the village of Laleham was designated as a Conservation Area. Laleham contains many fine and listed buildings notably Laleham Abbey. In the past this was owned by one of the Earls of Lucan. The hatchment in the north aisle of All Saints Church belonged to them. In the eastern part of the cemetery is the grave of Field Marshall Lord Lucan who gave the order for the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava.

Spelthorne Borough Council have recently announced that, following a planning stage and dependent on funding, Laleham Park is likely to be managed in the future as a Country Park with nature walks, fitness trails and (possibly) a cafe and visitors centre.

Runnymede Homes -

Homes Waiting List in Runnymede Doubles

Runnymede Borough Council say that more than 1500 people are now on the waiting list for homes. This is almost twice the number from April 2006. The reasons is mainly rising house prices and a growing number of people failing to be able to get onto the ladder due to a borough-wide lack of affordable housing.

The figures were lower in 2006 because the council provided some newly available affordable housing units.

Ascot in Top Ten Hottest Property Areas-

ASCOT No 1 'HOTTEST PROPERTY AREA' OF UK

Ascot is now No 1 in the Top Ten of Hottest Property Areas

1. Ascot
2. Barry- Glamorgan
3. Battersea
4. Biggin Hill- Kent
5. Bow
6. Bracknell
7. Brixton
8. Burpham- Surrey
9. Bury St Edmonds- Suffolk
10. Chadwell Heath

Five successive interest rises over the last year have finally caused the ‘slow down’ expected on property prices and have also caused sellers to re-assess how much they can expect their property to fetch. In August the Bank of England froze any further interest rises (for the remaining fiscal period) and so prices are now adjusting to more realistic levels. Staines and Spelthorne still offer excellent value for home buyers and Ascot (just a few minutes away) now tops the ‘Hot Property’ index.

Is STAINES the new Richmond-upon-Thames?

The choice of housing in Spelthorne Borough means an ample supply of flats, starter homes, bungalows and semi and detached houses.  Availability also keeps prices fairly reasonable. But with  the town’s proximity to the Heathrow airport,  the closeness of the M25, M3 and M4 arterial routes and the good mix of available jobs and careers, Staines is an excellent base to ‘put down roots’.

Our figures in the chart below indicate average prices (in the last 6 months) of property in Richmond Borough (first column) STAINES (second column) Hounslow borough (third column) and Old Windsor (last column.)

We have taken, for our chart,  ALL properties available in the last 6 months in the areas indicated  and calculated an average cost of housing. As can be seen, Richmond-upon-Thames is by far the more expensive area to buy/rent property and Colnbrook (Slough) is the cheapest.

Richmond [First Column] £498,000 average
Staines [Second Coumn] £202,000 average
Hounslow (Feltham) [Third Column) £238,000 average
Old Windsor [Last Column] £371,000 average
Cherstey (For comparison only) £273,000 average
Colnbrook-Slough (For comparison only) £180,000 average
