[Sin City 2]
Sin City 2
If you liked Robert Rodriguez's 2005 film noir
Sin City, based on Frank Miller's graphic novels (screenplay by Frank
Miller) then you will also enjoy Sin City 2- A Dame to Kill For. This
is rumoured to be one of two sequels filmed by Rodriguez
back-to-back.
Number 2 takes where the first film left us - in the dark bowels of
Basin City. Dwight plans to have his vengeance against the woman who
betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan's
death. Again with Rosario Dawson and Clive Owen but teasing rumours
abound abhout the likes of Johnny Depp, Antonio Banderas and Rachel
Weisz all being involved in the project. Because Rodriguez likes
to 'call an actor/actress at midnight' for a couple of days shooting,
this could explain the rumours- but they also help to maximise
publicity.

[The Eye]
The Eye
Jian Gui (the knowing eye) vaguely translates as meaning 'seeing
ghosts' and this remake of the 2002 Pang Brothers film called Jian Gui
is based around Sydney Wells (in the earlier film- the character 'Mun')
who is an accomplished concert violinist - blind since a childhood
tragedy. Sydney undergoes a double corneal transplant, and her sight is
restored. But Sydney's happiness is short-lived as unexplainable
shadowy and frightening images start to haunt her. Are they a passing
aftermath of her surgery, Sydney's mind adjusting to sight, a product
of her imagination, or something horrifyingl and supernatural?
She confronts her doctor's nephew (a psychologist) about the strange
entities she has been seeing through her new eyes. He seems hesitant to
believe her at first, but seeing as he cares about her and admitted to
her as being "more than a patient" he trusts her judgment and
accompanies her on a trip to locate the donor of the corneas.
The new 2008 version of this successful film directed by horror specialist David Moreau stars Jessica Alba as Sydney Wells.

[Shine a Light]
Shine a Light
A career-spanning documentary on the Rolling Stones.
You have probably already seen images from this picture - especially
those of Christina Aguilera and Mick getting hot together (on stage),
so you will be familier with this rockumentary already. This is
supposed to be a fresh look at the "Greatest Rock 'N Roll Band Ever"
through the lens of one of the greatest behind-the-camera men ever,
Martin Scorsese. Documenting two 2006 performances from the Stones' "A
Bigger Bang" tour it also contains plenty of archive footage.

[No Country For Old Men]
No
Country For Old Men
Acclaimed new crime drama from the Coen brothers in which a war veteran
discovers $2 million dollars from a crime gone awry.
Starring: Tommy Lee Jones & Josh Brolin (American Gangster)
No Country for Old Men is an exceptional mix of two creative
talents-the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen, and the author Cormac
McCarthy (recent winner of the Pulitzer for The Road, his
masterpiece). The story concerns an average Joe hunting in Texas one
day, who meets with a heap of corpses, heroin, and a satchel containing
2 million dollars in cash. He takes it, but without knowing that the
real incarnation of a psychopath (Javier Bardem) is on his path, and as
he evades him he becomes increasingly clear of the fatalism of his duel
role as a hunter and also the hunted.
The film poses some very serious questions about what is moral, or what
is not, or what is so ambiguous and what is not. You will never look at
a coin flip the same way again. Or fixing a bullet wound in a leg. Or
even a car crash.
This is pure cinema, recalling Leone and Hitchcock and Welles's 'Touch
of Evil' and the can take its place amongst the best of film noir and
westerns. There are so many exceptional shots and strokes of genius
that this seems worthy of an Oscar. And Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones
are also fantastic.

[Hole in My Pants- Dewey
Cox]
Walk
Hard - The Dewey Cox Story
Raucous parody of the rock biopic from 'Knocked Up's' Judd Apatow.
if you loved 'Walk the Line' and 'Ray' you should like this...but don't
take it too seriously. John C. Reilly (Tenacious D
and Talladega Nights) is fantastic in his role as singer Dewey Cox who
somehow manages to overcome adversity to become a
musical legend. Also stars Jenna Fischer (The Office- US Version and
Blades of Glory.)
Life made him tough. Love made him strong. Music made him hard.

[3:10 to Yuma]
3:10 to Yuma- release
date (on DVD) end of Jan 2008
Take two men. One is a good
man
but turns bad. One is a bad man but turns good. Or the good man was,
maybe, bad all along and the bad man was, maybe, good all along.
It is Arizona in the late 1800'and infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell
Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers are continuing to
plague
the Southern Railroad.
In the meantime, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale), is
struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch and also faces a
fight with the
railroad. The value of his ranch is more with him off it- so the
railroad company has resorted to strong arm tactics to force the family
to move out.
After a violent robbery on a railroad coach, Ben Wade is captured and
the railroad agent, together with the marshall, ask for volunteers to
deliver him alive
to the 3:10 to Yuma. From the station at Yuma a train that will take
the killer to trial.
On the rocky trail to Yuma, Evans and Wade, each from very different
worlds, begin to earn each other's respect. But with Wade's outfit on
their tail – and dangers at every turn – the
mission soon
becomes a violent, impossible journey towards destiny.
This film is a remake of the 1957 original, based on a short story by
Elmore Leonard (think 'Get Shorty' 'Maximum Bob'and the Tarantino flick
'Jackie Brown'
based on Elmore Leonard's 'Rum Punch'.)
Set against mountainous backdrops in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico,
the film explores the rocky road each man must travel and the highs and
low each must reach before gaining salvation.
Director, James Mangold ('Walk the Line' and 'Copland') keeps the speed
of the film moving with plentiful action sequences but, perhaps,
doesn't quite get
the stomach-churning tension quite right. The minutes leading up to the
final showdown at Yuma station felt almost mundane as Ben Wade (Crowe)
and
Dan Evans (Bale) sit it out in a manky hotel room in 'Contention'.
Similarly, you never feel that Evan's son William (Logan Lerman- 'The
Patriot') is
really in mortal danger. He just seems to be a mild irritation to the
two principle character actors.
My favourite character is Charlie Prince (Ben Foster- X Men and HBO
Original feature Six feet Under). Charlie is the kind of right-hand man
any self-respecting super-villian should have. He is loyal to the point
of worshipful, obedient and stark-raving-mad. But at the same time, he
is disciplined and intelligent and the script suggests that this
discipline and intelligence has been bred- by Ben Wade- into his
troops. After the stage coach robbery- we witness the gang meeting in a
bar to call a loyal toast to 'those troops we lost today'. Ben Wade
suggests that at least one of those men would be 'here today' if he
wasn't so sloppy.
So courage and discipline are explored in the film. But there are also
other themes. The railroad is chugging ever onwards and threatens to
destroy
lives and livelihoods. The ranchers, the bandits and even the Chinese
and the Apache indians are all affected by it. The railroad is change
and change is
coming and is never pleasant. Butterfield (played by Dallas Roberts),
the railroad agent, is a swaggering sneering character with a yellow
streak and no principles. He buys his way out of trouble and has plenty
of cash to see off any rivals. He is the 'face' of the railroad. But
even his money can't buy him luck or honour in the end.
The man with most principles is the anti-hero- Ben Wade. Although
Russell Crow plays the principle protagonist, you often wonder whether
you have got
the wrong end of the stick.. maybe, all along, the 'baddie' is
Christian Bale! We first see the Ben Wade character doing a neat sketch
of an eagle. He is
interested in ornithology, the bible, his momma, the discipline of his
troops, travel, history, art and ofcourse, women. (The few
women
who feature in this
movie are all irresistably drawn to him.) In fact, he is so
likeable, that Dan Evans' younger son takes a shine to him.
Even
though he admits to
killing countless men and stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In fact there is a whole lot of confusion about good and bad in this
story. When one major character is rude about Wade's momma he gets
chucked off of a mountain. The law-men are merciless killers or
on-the-take. The railroadmen are intollerent racists with a predliction
for torture. The Apache indians are murderous terrorists. Even the
'good man' himself, hero Dan Evans, has a blighted past. The
only
purely clean characters seem to be the two boys and the doc- played by
Alan Tudyk ('Dodgeball' and cult TV show 'Firefly'.)
